About

A house move is more common among most families across the US. People move from city to city and state to state for various reasons. The top challenge while moving is to ensure the safety of your fragile items. Since most fragile items do not come cheap, getting them broken during a house move would seem nothing less than a tragedy.

The good news is you can prevent your valuables from damaging during a move with adequate preparation. Here are some tips to help you secure your fragile items during a house move.

Tips for packing your fragile items to keep them safe

  • Preparing in advance: Take your time packing items made of porcelain, crystal, and other breakable materials. If you haven’t hired movers, be sure to start packing in advance to get enough time to pack items that are more susceptible to break during the move. Remember, packing considerations will change depending on whether you want to use a moving truck or car for the house move.
  • Having the right tools: Items and tools required to pack your fragile items usually include bubble wrap, pliable cardboard, packing paper, scissors, and tape. You will also need a large table on which you can lay out your items and start packing.
  • Labeling: Boxes containing your fragile items should remain distinguishable. That is where you need ‘Fragile’ labels. These labels will help you or handlers identify boxes requiring extra care.
  • Knowing what and how to pack: You have to know what items you need to pack and ways to do it properly. A flat-screen LCD and a delicate vase are fragile items, but both require different packing methods. You have to do fair research to find the best way to pack these items.

Packing most popular fragile items

  • Plates: You can pack plates vertically in small to medium boxes lined with crumpled packing paper on the bottom and top. First, you have to wrap each of your plates in bubble wrap and secure it with packing tape. Each vertical plate in the box should remain separated with a sheet of packing paper. Make sure not to over-pack your boxes.
  • Glass: Wrap each of your glasses with packing paper and place crumpled paper inside it to fill the space. Use a lining made of packing paper on the bottom and top of the box. Fill spaces between and around the glasses with packing paper to avoid movement inside the box.
  • Lamps: You will need to use a lot of paper while packing lamp shades. Make sure to place the lamp in such a way that its flat side goes against the bottom of the box. You can also use bubble wrap where appropriate.
  • Specialty items: Whether it is your family’s antique washbasin or any other fragile product, you have to secure it well before loading it in a moving truck. Due to its extra susceptibility to break, you have to use a lot of paper and bubble wrap with such a fragile item. After you have used appropriate cushioning inside the box, be sure to seal the entire packaging with packing tape.

Packing and moving fragile items can be tricky, but appropriate preparation and flawless packing can help you prevent damages.
